Make A Guess…

Business Development and Research Department - February 2004

This picture of my department was taken almost two years ago. Seated moving clockwise is Tan Ju Nah (left in October of 2005), Nazli Tan Sri Awang Had, Muaazam Mahmud, Christian Kumar, and, Faizal Sanusi…of course there’s me.

These are (were) the jacks and jill of all trades in the company.

I wonder how many will be left after the first quarter of this year. Take a guess….

This Is A Weird One…

‘No thanks’ to rescue helicopter

A stranded New Zealand diver turned down a lift by rescue helicopter – because he was afraid of heights.

The incident, which occurred just before Christmas, involved two divers who, after entering the sea off Island Bay in the Cook Strait, were left stranded when their dive boat lost power and drifted away. The boat put out an emergency call and a rescue helicopter and police launch arrived on site.

One diver was spotted in the sea near Island Bay’s Taputeranga Island, and was tended by the launch. When the other was spotted on a rock close to the island, the helicopter headed over to hoist him up. But when the lift man arrived alongside him, the diver refused to go, saying he was afraid of heights.

He said he would prefer to stay put a while longer and wait for the police launch. The winchman retreated and the diver duly swam out from the rock when the launch arrived to pick him up.

Foreign Domestic Helper

Anak - Vilma Santos, Claudine Barretto

Forget Harry Pothead…Baik Punya Cilok, or other movies that you see. If it isn’t an action movie, then I wouldn’t normally watch..except for some excellent ones such as Phenomenon, Michael, and Notting Hill.

Last night, I watched “Anak”, a Filipino movie about a foreign domestic helper who returned to Manila from Hong Kong, to a family that hardly knows her.

In reality, this is what is happening. These “maids” as we generally term them, leave their hometown, husband, sons and daughters, to find income they cannot normally find at their place of origin, even with the correct qualifications; even if they have to weather the abusive behaviour of some employers.

When I lived in USJ, my neighbour changed 3 maids in the span of 5 months. Every night as I sit facing my PC monitor, I would hear the maid scrubbing clothes before putting them into a washing machine, then hang the clothes to dry at around 2am. By 4.30am, she was up washing the three cars they own.

In another example, a maid was cruelly and physically abused by the employer’s wife until one day, the maid couldn’t bear it any longer, stabbed the employer’s wife to death.

We always forget that these “maids” are…human beings too…with physical limitations, in some cases, probably slower processing capacity than most of the employers. It is up to the employer to condition the maids into the routine and standards that we want them to have. We cannot expect them to know what we want them to be within a few hours of her stepping into the house. Even I still have trouble pressing the correct light switch at home after 2 years living there.

I do not dispute the fact that there are irresponsible maids too. As I said, they are human beings too. I’ve had one maid who spat into my stepson’s bottle (I gathered that in some Indonesian culture they do that so the child would grow up to listen to the person whose spit he/she drinks). I kicked that one back without hesitation. Another caused my wife and I to shop for food every month, and rack up a minimum of RM800 in electricity bill every month. Apparently she was a big eater, and would sleep in my children’s bedroom with the air-conditioning on from morning till evening when we’d come home.

But “Anak” gives a general idea about how families are broken up when these women have to migrate in order to give their children (and in many cases, husband) a better life, only to find that at the end of the rainbow is just another shattered dream.

If you have the time to watch the DVD, go buy it.

Dances With Dugong

...dances with dugong...

Cool stuff. I’ve always wanted to dive with Whale Sharks, Mantas, Tiger Sharks…but diving with Dugong never crossed my mind. And I have been given the opportunity to do so at Mantanani..or once known to the Royal Malaysian Navy as Station Mike.

Mantanani is said to be good for muck diving. Apart from the usual, one is bound to bump into other species such as the Glassfish, Marbled Stingray, schools of Eagle Rays, Octopus, seahorses, imperial shrimps, blue-ringed Octopus and lots of nudibranch.

Good thing is, I should be able to leave office on Friday, do two dives at Mantanani on Saturday, and fly back to Kuala Lumpur on Sunday…without having to apply for leave.

So eat that you power-crazed a**holes!!

Elie-gations

Who the f*** is Elie Youssef Najem? He is getting more news coverage than the pilgrims who died in Mecca! He is more annoying than the Crazy Frog!

His story came about when he pledged some RM1 billion plus to the Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA). Soon, stories about him came in droves (I’ll use that term). Crook? Maybe. I say maybe but I am more inclined to say yes. Besides the cheating allegations, he is also one-day-Muslim, another-day-I-don’t-know-what.

Latest twist is, his 19-year old wife may not even be his wife. She is three months pregnant now…but according to Elie, they were married back in September 2005. Early Sept? Mid Sept? Late Sept? Anyway, I won’t accuse her of doing anything bad..that is between her and the Almighty.

You're my wife...you're not my wife...I'm the 3rd richest man in the world...NOT!

Why I am saying she may not be his wife is because now the Kedah Religious Affairs Department has confirmed that the kadi who married them had died some ten years ago, and the serial number on the marriage certificate belongs to another couple.

The fact that he is still walking around giving press statements is…unbelievable. Even Datuk Kamarul Ariffin of MAKNA and the company that provides security for Elie have some hope of squeezing some portion of Elie’s Elie-ged billions.

Someone please take him to the PJ Police Station and make him ear-squat his billions out. And unmask him, please. Maybe he actually looks like THIS!!!

Another Beach-Goer Dies Of Shark Attack

Holy crap!!! Abort the rescue attempt!!

Apparently 3 bull sharks were responsible in the attack on a Brisbane woman last week, with one shark chasing rescuers as they dragged the victim’s mauled body back to shore. Sarah Kate Whiley, 21, from Brisbane, is the first to die by shark attack in the 44-year history of Queensland’s controversial Shark Safety Program (why is it controversial?).

The sharks continued to savage her after she lost both arms in the vicious attack just 20 meters from the shore in chest-deep water. Local fisherman, Gordon Dix said the beach was unsafe for swimming. The water dropped sharply into a deep channel and was often murky, with runoff from Moreton Bay emptying into the ocean, particularly after storms. “This was a tragedy waiting to happen,” Mr Dix said.
