I saw my very first Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) in February of 2000 while chit-chatting with a friend who was a manager at a marina in Sabah. We saw this huge thing at the entrance to the marina. My friend and I froze, said nothing, looked at each other, removed all non-waterproof belongings and jumped into the water to swim with the Whale Shark. After what seemed like 10 minutes, the shark was already too far for us to keep up with. We were overjoyed, but then banged our heads because we did not have a camera on us.
So ever since I rediscovered scuba diving, I vowed in July 2005 to fast for a whole week for each Whale Shark I see.
I have not shed any fat since.
This article is a good read for those wanting to know more about the Whale Sharks and its behaviour, and I urge all of you, please, let’s try and save the sharks.
